Olivia Duke: Climate change is arguably one of humanity’s greatest challenges. Decisive actions needs to be taken to slow down its pace. It’s critical to implement greener strategies for sustainability, including building projects that are built to withstand the climate of the next fifty years, and not the climate of the past; the need to implement building codes that promote net-zero emissions and policies that move away from fossil fuels.

I plan to support greener strategies for building projects, including retrofits to reduce energy consumption; zero-emission transit/school bus transportation; promote active transportation; encouraging greater tree-planting is important to make a meaningful impact.

Eden Wood: I believe the greatest opportunity Burlington has to mitigate climate change is to transition the energy system.  We do this by focusing on reducing consumption of energy, improving the efficiency of the energy system (supply/demand) & by switching to low carbon or zero carbon renewable energy.

I would like to prioritize the “A City that Moves” portion of the budget. This porton not only focuses on the mode of transportation, (bus, car, etc) but also human resources (mechanics (maintenance) park, forestry and road workers, engineers etc). There are many moving parts in order to reduce, improve, and switch to renewable sources of energy; in my opinion, to accelerate this, we will need funding from higher levels of government.
