Established in 2007, we are a citizen-led, nonpartisan, not-for-profit environmental agency. Through awareness, advocacy and action initiatives, our mission is to protect the environment and mobilize the community to make Burlington a healthy, environmentally responsible city..
Around the Kitchen Table
On November 18, 2007, Burlington resident, Kurt Koster sent a media release to the Burlington Post with an aim to recruit citizens to form a local advocacy group to speak up for the rights of the environment.
A handful of passionate individuals gathered, grassroot efforts took hold, and BurlingtonGreen Environmental Association was born. Since that time, our team has grown, welcoming the valuable contributions of many and our work has expanded to keep pace with the increasing demands that come with a city that is reaching its growth capacity.
While the scope of our work has become more diverse over the years, the key objectives established around the kitchen table at Kurt Koster's home, remain in place today: Through awareness, advocacy and action initiatives, our mission is to protect the environment and mobilize the community to make Burlington a healthy, environmentally responsible city.
We are a welcoming, inclusive organization. Our primary team consists of a volunteer Board of Directors and a very small staff, consisting of an Executive Director and part-time program staff, which varies in size depending upon the amount of funds we receive.
While we collaborate with the City of Burlington on some projects and initiatives, we are not affiliated with the City itself. We operate very lean and spend every dollar wisely. We have chosen to operate without registered charitable status, as doing so could limit our ability to advocate for rights and justice for the environment. The participation and contribution of our many volunteers, along with funding from grants, sponsors and donations from the community, is vital to the strength & sustainability of our agency.
"BurlingtonGreen has been very effective in its short history
in making itself the organization citizens and councillors alike turn to with their environmental questions and concerns.
The City of Burlington is a more environmentally conscious city as a result of BurlingtonGreen’s outreach activities."
– Paul Toffoletti, Past Chair, Burlington Sustainable Development Committee
How We Work
We provide a dedicated voice for the environment to inform and influence public policy. Our work is based on research and a good understanding of the facts, presented with a solution-focus. Our goal is to protect and improve the health of the environment, not to advance the goals of any specific political party or candidate. We collaborate with citizens, businesses, organizations, advocates and governments to ensure the rights of the environment are respected.
In addition to our local advocacy work, we make direct and tangible improvements to the local environment through the delivery of a wide variety of impactful programs, events and services. We invite the participation of all sectors of the community to collectively achieve our mission and goals. You can learn more about our programs here.
Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held annually in March and includes a presentation of our agency's efforts, achievements, partnerships and financials.
*The acceptance of funding is done at the sole discretion of the Executive Director & Board of Directors based on a donor review process.
