9000 Trees & Habitat at Risk

Learn about (TEC) Tyandaga Environmental Coalition’s efforts to protect the estimated 9,000 mature trees that are threatened by the Meridian quarry expansion.

Recognizing the value of aggregates to support our infrastructure, the aggregate sector should not take priority over protecting important forest cover, water resources and shrinking agricultural lands. A sustainable model for aggregate extraction without compromising natural environments must be advanced if we are to address the current biodiversity and climate crises.

In 2018, BurlingtonGreen filed an Application for Review to the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario (ECO) to review the Meridian Quarry license and take action to protect the sensitive ecosystems on site.

As a result of TEC’s efforts and support from the community, the Mayor of Burlington is introducing several staff directions on this important issue.

BurlingtonGreen is a non-partisan, solution-focused organization. Together with the community we work to advance our mission to protect the environment, mitigate climate change and create a healthier more environmentally responsible Burlington.
