Become a Burlington Transit Youth Ambassador Today!

Transit ambassadors group photo

For the past 5 years the BurlingtonGreen Youth Network (BGYN) has been working with Burlington Transit on an innovative program designed to promote sustainable forms of transportation in our Burlington high schools.

This is one of the first programs of its kind – a transit authority, a community environmental organization, and local youth working together in partnership to increase student ridership, for a more sustainable future.

If YOU apply to become a BT YA, you will be working with Burlington Transit to...

  • Promote special offers and programs in your school including World Car Free Day and Earth Day promotions as well as promoting transit tools such as the PRESTO Pass and how to easily "Google-Map" your transit routes

  • Occasionally conduct surveys and solicit feedback from students at your school.

  • Provide ideas to Burlington Transit to generate ridership as well as plan and implement initiatives in your school.

  • Attend BT YA! team meetings (approximately every 6-8 weeks during the school year), working with staff mentors from BurlingtonGreen & Burlington Transit to create and implement transit promotional campaigns (all training, promotional materials and support provided).

Still can't visualize what you might be doing as a Youth Ambassador?

Learn more about the BT YA program by watching our latest promo video:

Now you may be asking, what's in it for me?

If you are selected to be one of two BT YA!s for your school, you will...

  • Receive a signing bonus including a $50 pre-loaded Presto Pass, BT YA! T-shirt, a City of Burlington Swim & Skate Pass and more!

  • EARN REWARDS! The BT YA! program has a Tier-based Reward System. Simply put, the more you do to promote transit in your school, the more rewards you can earn. *You could receive rewards like movie tickets & gift cards to items like digital E-readers!

  • Have the opportunity to win $$$ rewards for your school Eco-club to go towards environmental initiatives. We award a $250 prize for each of our two larger campaigns as well as a $1000 grand prize at the end of the school year.

  • Contribute to a healthier environment by encouraging active and public transportation in your school community.

  • Gain great "real-life"experience working with a community organization which can be highlighted on your resume and through reference letters written by BurlingtonGreen and/or Burlington Transit.

  • Earn volunteer hours for all of your work outside of school hours including BT YA! meetings (work done on a spare period or lunch period may be eligible for volunteer time as well).

How to apply:

Visit the Burlington Transit website here to learn more and sign up, or email Robert Hagley if you have any questions about the program.

REMEMBER, there are only 2 spots available per high school, so make sure you apply today!

$250 Prize!! Burlington Transit Helps YOUR School Celebrate Earth Day

In support of Earth Day 2019 (taking place on April 22nd), we are encouraging ALL Burlington students to walk, bike or take the bus to school to take action for the planet locally!

All groups who participate in the campaign (including submission of a brief post-campaign report summarizing actions taken & results) will receive $50 courtesy of Burlington Transit for a pizza party or team celebration.

The school that has the best overall performance will also receive a $250 cash prize for an eco-initiative that will benefit their school community!

Who is Eligible to Participate in this TAKE ACTION opportunity?

Any organized group of students (along with a teacher liaison) such as but not limited to: Environmental Clubs, Social Justice Clubs, Student Council, Classes (World Issues, Geography, etc.), Groups of Passionate Students

What’s Involved?

By choosing to participate in this campaign, you will be encouraging other students and school staff to leave the car at home and use more eco-friendly forms of transportation (walk, bike or take the bus).

You can promote the campaign through a variety of creative ways:

1) Submit announcements to be read over the school P.A
2) Put up posters around your school (2 poster designs provided)
3) Submit content for your school newsletter/website
4) Create your own social media accounts or piggy-back existing school social media accounts
5) Organize short classroom presentations (5 minutes is usually enough to explain the campaign & hand-out ballots)
6) Arrange for time to ask for pledges at a school assembly/gathering
7) Set up an information table in a high-traffic area in your school to collect pledges for the planet

What to do at your campaign info table?

Setting up a table to encourage pledges does not have to be boring! Get creative and play games (trivia, matching games, spin the wheel, etc.), set up an interesting visual using completed pledge cards to gather more interest, play music...have fun

In addition to supplying posters, promo cards & a $250 prize, Burlington Transit will also be providing eco-friendly give-aways that you can reward those who have taken the pledge.

How will the winner be chosen?

The winner will be determined based on impact (the amount of pledges which will vary depending on school population), and the creativity of approach.
Bonus points will be awarded for photos & other media documenting the campaign in your school!

What Does TRANSIT Have to Do With Earth Day?

  • One bus takes up to 40 vehicles off the road, and keeps 25 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions out of the atmosphere each year! (source

  • Switching from driving a car to school to taking public transit can cut daily carbon emissions by 20 pounds, or more than 4,800 pounds a year (compare to 445 pounds of CO2/year by replacing five incandescent bulbs to CFL bulbs)! (source)
