Kids Go Green (JK to Grade 6)

This popular program provides a fun, interactive and educational experience to encourage children to live more softly on the earth and to grow up green. Each workshop has three main components:

Part 1: Get Inspired While Having Fun!

Larry the Landfill - Grades JK to 2/3:

Using activity props, the children discover how they can reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill by sorting items into the correct waste bins - green bin, recycling, and garbage.

Be the Change - Grades 3 to 6:

Here we challenge the participants to identify how their lifestyle habits and choices impact the environment. Working in teams, the children view a series of images presented by our workshop facilitator, to determine if they are either good or bad for the environment. Children are given an opportunity to explain their answers and share their experiences.

Part 2: Make a Pledge Button

Part two builds on the lessons learned and allows time for creativity as each child makes their own eco-pledge button to take home as a reminder of their educational ( and fun) program experience.

Part 3: Take Action

After learning ten ways they can help the planet locally, participants take part in the 'Go Green Challenge' where they choose eco-actions they would like to try to commit to.

BG Eco-Heroes (Grades 7&8)

This Program engages and empowers youth about important, locally focused environmental issues, with the added benefit of linking them to related volunteer opportunities and ways to take action in their homes, their schools and their communities. There are currently two options for areas of focus:

Zero Waste

This presentation focuses on plastics, textiles and food waste emphasizing waste reduction by encouraging participants to be mindful of the amount of waste they create. Students then participate in the Zero Waste Week Challenge that invites them to reduce their waste over one week.

Healthy Habitats

This presentation focuses on forests as the “lungs of the earth” by highlighting their vital role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem and capturing carbon. Students then participate in the Healthy Habitats Scavenger Hunt Challenge that invites them to identify native trees and find a new green space in Burlington.

BurlingtonGreen Youth Network & Leadership Council (High School)

Our Provincially-recognized Youth Eco-Network brings students out of the classroom and into the community, but we are always happy to visit your classroom, youth group or eco-club to talk about the awareness, advocacy and action opportunities available for students.

The BurlingtonGreen Youth Network

We connect youth from across the City with each other and with local opportunities to make a positive impact on the environment. We aim to create the next generation of local eco-heroes through youth mentoring youth, environmental leadership opportunities and participation in tree planting, event greening, and more.

The BGYN meets once a month to share ideas, be inspired by exciting guest speakers, plan and implement youth-led eco-campaigns and participate in hands-on local eco-action projects.

The Youth Leadership Council 

The Youth Leadership Council provides a great opportunity for eco-minded youth to play a key role in creating and providing impactful opportunities for other youth in Burlington and to cultivate their leadership skills. The Leadership Council consists of two students from each high school in Burlington.
