Al Gore update on Global Warming - our first Annual General Meeting featured an Al Gore update from TED (Ideas Worth Spreading), a special funding announcement from MPP Savoline and The Ontario Trillium Foundation of a 2 year grant of $132,100 to BurlingtonGreen and HEN (Halton Environmental Network), to support the acquisition of IT and media equipment, a new eco-conference for Youth and the hiring of part-time staff to support the planning and implementation of new outreach programs, resources and events for the people of Burlington. Ban Bottled Water - on March 12, 2009, we hosted an awareness event about the issue of bottled water and the associated environmental implications. The international award winning documentary "Flow" was featured along with a follow-up audience discussion about advocating for a ban of bottled water in Burlington's buildings and schools. - Go Green with BurlingtonGreen workshops -held at the Royal Botanical Gardens for the Earth Day Hamilton/Burlington Earth week event, our youth volunteers led inspired workshops for hundreds of grade 4-6 students on how they can take "greener" actions at home, school and in their communties. The kids and the high-school youth leaders had a terrific time sharing ideas, playing games and pledging positive actions to support the environment! We continue the workshops today with our most recent programs offered during the fall, 2009 at Discovery Landing on the Waterfront.
- Imprints: Make Your Mark;Leave No Trace (Burlington's First Environmental Youth Conference) -held at Robert Bateman H.S. on October 22, 2009, BurlingtonGreen was pleased to support this major event through funding dollars courtesy of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and as a lead planning parner. Special guest keynote, Robert Bateman started off the day of interactive learning with an inspired presentation and over 400 youth participated in various workshops with an eco-focus. BurlingtonGreen also worked with the youth planning team to make sure the event was GREEN with clean, green energy supplid by Bullfrog Power, a lunch using local foods and no disposable containers, a near zero paper free event and more.
- Eco-Awards Celebration - On November 26, 2009, BurlingtonGreen introduced this city's first eco-award celebration. An important opportunity to recognize and celebrate local environmetal efforts of citizens, businesses, community groups, youth and schools. Over 100 people attended this event with 14 worthy recipients recognized for their greening efforts. A highlight of the evening included a keynote presentation and song by juno award winning Sarah Harmer. As a co-founder of PERL(Protecting Escarpment Rural Lands), Sarah serves as a perfect example of a Burlington native committed to local environmental protection. - Renewable Energy in Burlington - June 22, 2010 - BurlingtonGreen was pleased to host this event at the Central Library where citizens were provided with the opportunity to learn all about solar, geothermal options for their homes and community along with an exciting new initiative that BurlingtonGreen is undertaking ( a Green Energy Co-op) so that anyone can support renewable energy by purchasing an affordable share in the co-op. - BurlingtonGreen was pleased to present an exciting line-up of award winning films for the 2010 Eco-film festival! See poster for all the details! Our festival began on Thursday, March 11 with the screening of "Blue Gold: World Water Wars" which is an extremely engaging film about water as a basic human right & the various powers that are trying to take control of the public's water for profit and control. Our second film was "Chemerical" which was screening strategically at spring cleaning time to serve as an important opportunity to learn more about eco-friendly cleaning practices. Our third event screened the Academy Award nominated Best Documentary "Food Inc" and our guests enjoyed delicious organic cookies courtesy of Eco Chefs. Discussion focused on what individual efforts each of us can take to support local, healthy food choices and more. Check out our tip sheet here. Our fourth film was H2Oil which turned out to be timely in the wake of the BP oil explosion. This film focuses on the social, economic and of course environmental implications of the Alberta Tar Sands, one of the largest oil patches in the world-second only to Saudi Arabia.Following the film, the audience discussed their thoughts on human and Burlington's dependancy on oil and actions we can each take to lower this dependency. Our final film was The Age of Stupid which we chose as the "summary" film focusing on the significance of globl warming and how critical it is that we TAKE ACTION NOW before it is too late. Future generations will ask why we did not do something to prevent irreversibel consequences when we had the chance.

- BurlingtonGreen hosts All-Candidates Meeting: With City wide interest in the 2010 election stronger than ever before, BurlingtonGreen together with TV Cogeco decided to host this FREE important event to support citizen engagement.The 300 seat Mainway Recreation Centre was filled as citizens from all wards gathered to meet one on one with the many ward Councillor candidates during the 7-8 pm open house kick start to the evening.Four of the 5 Mayoral Candidates (Carol D'Amelio sent her regrets due to a prior committment) addressed a series of thoughtful questions submitted by members of the audience.Affordable housing for seniors, greenspace protection, the pier project and Council accountability were some of the topics addressed in the 13 question Mayoral forum.The public also had the opportunity to view the responses of candidates to the BurlingtonGreen eco-questionnaire and representatives from Shape Burlington also displayed copies of the results of their questionnaire about a broad range of issues as well.Thank you citizens of Burlington for demonstrating your committment to creating a brighter future for our city by participating in this event!
- Second Environmental Youth Conference -Imprints: Make your mark; leave no trace was held on October 28 at the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens with more than 300 youth and teachers from throughout Burlington in attendance. This year's theme focused on biodiversity to recognize the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity. 9 unique workshops designed or selected by the youth planning team were available for participants to choose from. - BurlingtonGreen AGM/Celebration - On November 23, 2010, BurlingtonGreen held it's third Annual General Meeting where guests enjoyed a multi-media presentation highlighting the many efforts advanced by our organization for the past three years. The audience was also invited to share their input on what they consider to be the environmental priorities for our City and how BurlingtonGreen can support their advancement. The event also included a very special announcement about the launch of one of Ontario's first renewable energy Co-ops! Led my BurlingtonGreen, BrightSky Power was intrduced as an exciting new opportunity to advance solar energy projects directed and supported by the community.
- Home Energy Conservation : On January 20, 2011 BurlingtonGreen was pleased to have well-known eco-friendly builder, Dave Braden as our guest presenter for this event focusing on how to save money and help the environment at the same time with energy conservation tips. Mr Braden lives in "one of the most energy efficient (homes) in Canada" LOTS of folks turned out for this popular event with practical tips on how to help the planet locally through home conservation efforts.
- Climate Change Presentation at the RBG: On Jan 28, 2011, BurlingtonGreen was pleased to co-host an inspiring presentation by outdoor educator and Al Gore's Climate Project trainee, Mr. Grant Linney. Over 100 people attended this multi-media presentation and Q & A session that not only provided a compelling presentation of global warming and climate change facts, but the event included an empowering segment highlighting local group efforts (such as BurlingtonGreen) geared to tackle this global concern at the local level.
- Environmental Vision Workshop: On March 10, 2011, BurlingtonGreen offered an opportunity for citizens to have their say on eco-focused issues that matter to them. In preparation of the City's Strategic planning process, we thought it important to hear what the top environment related priorities are for citizens with an objective of summarizing the findings and forwarding them to staff and Council and the Mayor in April. Greenspace protection, issues pertaining to urban sprawl, water protection and transit were ranked as the top priority issues for this in attendance.
