  1. This is a great initiative. Thanks to Amy, Kale, Kurt and the whole team for being proactive to give Burlington residents the information they need to face the energy, waste, pollution and other challenges ahead.
  2. A recent comment on March 17 by Burlington Green suggests that the summit will be less accessible to the general public with a $50.00 - 100.00 admission fee. Most of the participants are product and service suppliers, Gov’t orgs, and agencies;but what are the takeaways for this summit?
Is this a community summit where participants can engage in open understanding of realistic actions to climate change; or is this a networking event for businesses and government stakeholders? I suggest that if the participants are paying to listen to presentations by highly visible businesses and environmental organizations without a clear purpose to action or policy change then the later is the case.
If the City of Burlington is hosting the event and it is sponsored by Not for Profit organizations, Gov't agencies like the Region of Halton, and Energy suppliers then this is moreover a paid programming event funded by tax dollars without a clear outcome and definitely is not a summit.
  3. The purpose of the Climate Change Summit is to provide an opportunity for citizens, businesses, organizations and government to gather for the day to learn from presenters and each other about effective ways to take action to address climate change locally. The fee to register for residents is $50 and free registration has been extended to Burlington Youth with one student invited to attend from every high-school.Understanding that the registration fee may be cost prohibitive for some AND given the importance of this issue, the City has also been busy planning a second event to be held on Saturday, June 5 (World Env.Day)) at Civic Square/City Hall. The emphasis will be on a fun, interactive, family oriented day with a variety of displays, activities and interesting presentations and demonstrations focusing on community actions and initiatives to conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Further details about the June event will be posted on the city website in May.Hope this clarification is helpful.
  4. This is a great opportunity to bring together our community to develop some local strategies to help address a very serious global issue. That being said, accessibility is a serious concern. A $50 fee is out of the range of feasibility for many Burlington families and to accomplish the goal of local climate change action will require the input and action of a broad coalition of community partners. Further, the fact that this event is being held on a weekday when many members of our community have work commitments complicates the ability to fully engage our community. That being said, I understand that events of this nature do require a cost and given the various work schedules of members of our community, accommodating the date and time for everyone will never be possible. Given these concerns, this would be a fantastic opportunity to engage Burlington residents through the use of on-line technology such as a webcast or a podcast and to make use of our local COGECO broadcaster.
  5. Thank you very much for your valued feedback and great suggestion to look at broadcasting the event so that all citizens of Burlington can benefit as well. Also, on June 5, the City of Burlington will be hosting another event dedecated to "taking action" to support the local environment. At this event, the outcomes of the May 6 Climate Change summit will be shared with the community as well.
