The Sustainable Halton NHS(Natural Heritage System) is a long range environmental planning effort intended to protect the habitat necessary to sustain native plants and animals over the long term. The NHS is of particular importance in the context of anticipated ongoing urban development in the Region.
The Sustainable Halton NHS includes some areas of active agriculture in order to achieve the ecological goal and criteria. It should be noted that the NHS is not intended to restrict agricultural practices or the development of agricultural infrastructure where it is required to maintain a sustainable and healthy rural agricultural community.
After 5 years of public consultation, Halton is about to adopt its new Regional Official Plan Amendment, ROPA 38, on December 16. This document will guide planning in this Region until 2031.
